DETROIT >> And this year’s Super Bowl winner will be … the Denver Broncos.
At least that’s according to a number of Detroit Red Wings.
“I’ve got to pick Peyton Manning,” Wings coach Mike Babcock said. “He’s ultra-competitive. He’s a working machine. Him and (Tom) Brady to me are incredible because they’re so intelligent and they execute so good and they’ve done it over and over and over again. I just think it’s impressive. But I also (respect) Seattle as well so who knows. Plus the NHL will be in Seattle one day.”
Seeing Manning another Super Bowl seemed to be the driving force behind many of the picks.
“I think Peyton just has the moxie about him and comes through in the big games,” Justin Abdelkader said. “I enjoy offense, I enjoy Peyton, how he orchestrates offense, how he switches calls all the time at the line. He’s such a smart quarterback, he reads defenses and finds the weakness of the defense and exploits it.”
“I’m going with Denver,” Luke Glendening said. “I just think Peyton Manning is too good. I know they’ve got some great players on Seattle’s team but I like Denver.”
“I think (Manning) has got great character and he’s kind of hard not to cheer for,” Riley Sheahan said.
“Denver, by four,” Danny DeKeyser said. “Peyton’s got it this year, but Seattle looks good. But if there’s a snow storm I’d have to go with Seattle.”
“I’m going with Denver, just because of Peyton,” Brian Lashoff said. “Seattle’s good defensively. They’ve got a good team, but Denver’s got the best offense. Peyton’s been here, he’s won it, so I’m going to go with him.”
Kyle Quincey’s pick was easy because he’s a Broncos fan.
“I jumped right on that bandwagon hard,” Quincey said. “I got a good buddy on the offensive line (Orlando Franklin), that I’ve been cheering for all year.”
Brendan Smith went the other way and is picking Seattle.
“I feel that Denver is strong and they can and should pull out the win, but I’m cheering for Seattle,” Smith said. “I’m going to go out on a limb and say prediction: Seattle.
“They’re mean, they’re tough and they’ve got a good make-up so they can do it,” Smith continued. “I think it comes down to, Can you stop Peyton? And will Lynch’s running game be effective? I think that will be the whole game.”
Jimmy Howard is also pulling for the Seahawks.
“I was actually rooting for San Francisco,” Howard said. “I like the way the Seahawks play. I like their defense, how they’re in the receivers’ faces. I just think they’re a fun team to watch.”
