DETROIT – Darren Helm was a late scratch to the lineup suffering from a sore groin according to Wings general manager Ken Holland.
Helm took the pre-game skate against the Toronto Maple Leafs at Michigan Stadium.
Holland said he’s day-to-day.
His absence forced Wings coach Mike Babcock to split up Henrik Zetterberg and Pavel Datsyuk off the top line.
Instead, Datsyuk skated with Todd Bertuzzi and Justin Abdelkader, while Zetterberg was with Daniel Alfredsson and Gustav Nyquist.
It’s the 26th game Helm has missed due to injury this season.
Helm had just returned from a left shoulder injury.
Helm has been hot offensively with seven goals and four assists in 16 games.
Helm returned to the lineup on Nov. 2 after playing in just two games over the last 19 months.
He had missed 89 of the Wings’ last 91 games, last playing on Jan. 25.
To begin the season, Helm was sidelined with a back problem and then his groin became an issue.
