DETROIT – The list of injured players just got a little bit longer for the Detroit Red Wings.
Gustav Nyquist won’t play tonight against the Anaheim Ducks and is listed as day-to-day with a sore groin.
“They tell me it’s day-to-day so in 10 days we’ll talk about it,” Wings coach Mike Babcock said after the team’s morning skate at Joe Louis Arena.
Nyquist joins Henrik Zetterberg (back), Johan Franzen (concussion-like symptoms), Justin Abdelkader (concussion-like symptoms), Jimmy Howard (knee), Darren Helm (shoulder), Danny DeKeyser (shoulder) and Stephen Weiss (groin) sidelined with injuries.
“It’s more of a day-to-day thing I think, just being a little careful with it,” Nyquist said. “We’re getting a lot of flares up right now and that’s unfortunate obviously but it gives other guys an opportunity. We’ve called up a lot of guys now from Grand Rapids and they’ve been doing great down there so hopefully they can help the team win tonight.”
The speedy winger injured it against Tampa Bay on Sunday. He has yet to have an MRI to find out the extent of the injury.
“It’s been steadily improving since the game,” Nyquist said. “It actually got better since the game, after the game it kind of hurt, but it’s just one of those things you’ve gotta be careful about so you don’t hurt it even more.”
A groin issue is something new for Nyquist, who has four goals and four assists in 13 games this season with the Wings.
“I’ve seen and heard from guys is that you’ve gotta be careful with it,” Nyquist said.
