Franzen says he’ll play Saturday; Lidstrom will take part in alumni game at Winter Classic

DETROIT — Quick update from the first group of skaters at Joe Louis Arena.

Johan Franzen (hip flexor) said he’ll play Saturday night against the Boston Bruins at Joe Louis Arena.

Daniel Alfredsson (groin) could also take part in the as well. He returned to practice after missing Thursday.

It’s more than likely Stephen Weiss will not play since he played Thursday in Boston. But that will be confirmed after he skates with the second group.

Darren Helm (groin/back) skated for roughly 30 minutes, but left before team drills.

There has been no updates given yet on the injuries to Patrick Eaves (knee/ankle) and Jakub Kindl (hip flexor).

Also, finally be revealed by the Wings is that Nicklas Lidstrom will take in the Winter Classic alumni game which is scheduled to be played Dec. 31 at Comerica Park.

Lidstrom, who retired in 2012 after playing 20 seasons with the Wings, is also scheduled to have his No. 5 retired in a pre-game ceremony on March 6 against the Colorado Avalanche.

Forwards: Red Berenson, Garry Unger, Igor Larionov, Dennis Polonich, Jimmy Carson, Mathieu Dandenault, Slava Kozlov, Brendan Shanahan, Doug Brown, Dallas Drake, Kirk Maltby, Martin Lapointe, Mickey Redmond, Paul Ysebaert, Dino Ciccarelli, Darren McCarty, John Ogrodnick, Joe Kocur, Kris Draper, Petr Klima and Tomas Holmstrom.

Defensemen: Slava Fetisov, Jiri Fischer, Mark Howe, Nicklas Lidstrom, Jason Woolley, Mathieu Schneider, Chris Chelios, Aaron Ward, Steve Duchesne, Brian Rafalski and Larry Murphy.

Goalies: Mike Vernon, Chris Osgood, Manny Legace, Ken Holland and Eddie Mio

Coaches: Scotty Bowman, Jacques Demers and Barry Smith.

Ted Lindsay, Gordie Howe, Alex Delvecchio and Vladimir Konstantinov will be on hand at the event, but will not take part in the game.
