Yet another rookie defenseman will be patrolling the Red Wings blue line.
Brian Lashoff will make his Stanley Cup playoff debut in Saturday’s Game 3 against visiting Anaheim. Lashoff, 22, will take the place of fellow rookie Danny DeKeyser, who is out for the remainder of the postseason with a broken thumb.
Lashoff will get the call ahead of veterans Ian White (22 games) and Carlo Colaiacovo (11 games), who have at least some previous playoff experience. Both of the latter have been healthy scratches in Games 1 and 2 of the first round.
In 31 regular season games, Lashoff compiled 15 points, but was a -10 in the plus/minus category. He will be expected to replicate the consistent puck-moving success that DeKeyser had shown before the injury. Head coach Mike Babcock held DeKeyser in very high esteem, even crediting him with helping the Wings sneak into the playoffs for a 22nd consecutive season.
“I think we’ve done a real good job to rebuild our D on the fly here,” Babcock said. “We’ve had great growth on the back end. Getting DeKeyser to come has made a huge difference to our team. If we don’t’ get (him) we don’t make the playoffs.”
