Tootoo a space holder on Wings’ second power play unit

DETROIT — Jordin Tootoo found himself providing the net-front presence on the Wings’ second power-play unit in practice.

But don’t expect him to be there at game time Friday.

“I wanted Dan Cleary to work on the penalty kill, and Clears is a net-front guy on the power play,” Wings coach Mike Babcock said after practice Thursday at Joe Louis Arena.

Johan Franzen provides the net-front presence on the first unit.

“It kind of happened spontaneously,” Tootoo said. “Kind of fill in, go in wherever you’re needed. It’s part of it, things happen out there pretty quick. I’m more than happy to stand in front of the net and take a beating.”

Tootoo did see some power play time while with Nashville.

He has three power play goals in his NHL career.

“I got a chance every once in a while,” Tootoo said. “When you’re playing good, good things happen. For me, it’s just inch-by-inch, just plugging away and making the best of every opportunity I get.”
