DETROIT — There has been speculation since the Wings signed Jonas Gustavsson that Joey MacDonald wants out of Detroit.
The one thing Wings GM Ken Holland knows for sure is that MacDonald doesn’t want to be in the American Hockey League.
“His agent called and wanted to know what was the plan for him,” Holland said. “He doesn’t want to be in the AHL. If we can find Joey an opportunity in the NHL, we will.”
MacDonald’s season ended after a back injury, which won’t need surgery.
MacDonald, 32, has one year remaining on his one-way contract at $550,000, which means he’ll get paid the same amount of money if he’s in the NHL or minors.
The Wings would have a hard time trying to deal MacDonald because if they tried sending him to the minors he would have to clear waivers and any team could claim him. Plus, not many teams are looking for goalies.
For his career, MacDonald is 31-48-13, with a 3.04 GAA and .903 save percentage.
