DETROIT — After practice Monday, former Wings TV play-by-play man Dave Strader reported that a few players, one of which was Todd Bertuzzi, wouldn’t allow the Predators to use the Ping-Pong table that sits in the hallway between the two locker rooms.
“I wasn’t even aware of that, but I guess it shows that it’s our ping-pong table,” Nicklas Lidstrom laughed.
On Tuesday, how the incident occurred was cleared up.
“It was the security guard,” said Nashville defenseman Roman Josi, who was playing a game with Brandon Yip at the time. “They didn’t really take it away, they just said we’re not allowed to play. I like to play, me and Brandon always play in Nashville.”
Added Wings coach Mike Babcock, “So that’s why stuff like that are rumors. Lots of rumors going around, when I’m bored I start them.”
In the past the Wings used to kick a soccer ball around the hallway to loosen up and unwind.
“If they want a ping pong table in Nashville, I’m more than willing to give them one,” Nashville coach Barry Trotz said. “It’s their toys. We have our toys, all those things, a Ping-Pong table, our balls. We’re OK. We’ve got a soccer ball. We have our things that we do. There’s nothing really to it. That’s their decision, it’s their toy.”
There was also a report that Bertuzzi wheeled the table away.
“It’s just a rumor,” Yip said. “We just went out there to play, the security guard said we’re not to play, so we were a little disappointed, but we went back and did our normal routine.
“I got a little more TV time,” Yip joked. “It was a little funny, it’s nothing to look too far into, I don’t think. We should probably challenge them to doubles.”
