Holland confirms talks with Nabokov’s agent

The Wings are in negotiations with the agent for goalie Evgeni Nabokov.

“We’ve had conversations,” Detroit general manager Ken Holland said.

Holland would not say why the Wings were suddenly interested in obtaining Nabokov, “Those are more questions for if something does happen – can’t put the cart before the horse.”

Jimmy Howard is back to full health after missing two games with a bruised knee and is expected to start tonight in St. Louis.

Joey MacDonald is the backup with Chris Osgood on the shelf recovering from sports hernia surgery he had done on Jan. 11.

Osgood is scheduled to return sometime in early- to mid-March.

“The surgery went well,” Holland said. “He is rehabbing. Barring any setbacks, he’s (out) six to eight weeks.”

Nabokov became a free agent in December after being released from his contract by SKA St. Peterburg in Russia’s KHL.

Even if the Wings come to a contract agreement with the free-agent goalie, he may not be heading to Detroit. Nabokov would have to clear waivers in order to join the Wings.
