TRAVERSE CITY — Kirk Maltby, who’s battling for a roster spot his year, scored the first goal of the intra-squad scrimmage.
“It’s good for Malts,” Mike Babcock said. “He’s just in a situation with his contract where he has to win a job here.”
Maltby, who signed a two-way deal with the Wings this offseason, is in a battle to just remain with the team out of training camp. Bright spots like this performance Sunday help.
“You always want to play well regardless of your situation,” Maltby said. “This gives you a little momentum and a little confidence to go out and just play.”
Maltby is also coming off season-ending shoulder surgery.
“I can’t sit here and worry about what may or may not happen,” Maltby said. “If you do it could carry over on the ice and affect that.”
