Maltby signs deal

DETROIT — Just moments after Kirk Maltby skated with his teammates during an informal skate at Joe Louis Arena, Maltby dashed off to Ken Holland’s office to sign a one-year, two-way deal with the team.

“I would have come down (Tuesday), but I don’t think stuff was finished,” Maltby said after the skate. “I think any player in the league, whether it’s a 15-year veteran or a two-year veteran anyone would love to have a one-way contract.”

The contract is worth $525,000 if he plays in Detroit, $105,000 if he plays in Grand Rapids.

Maltby has been with the Wings since 1996 and will more than likely begin the season in Grand Rapids.

“That’s something I’ll deal with if that comes to surface,” Maltby said. “Right now it’s about Traverse City (training camp) and exhibition games.”
