TROY — The Wings had planned to retire Nicklas Lidstrom’s No. 5 jersey on Feb. 5, prior to their game against the Columbus Blue Jackets.
The NHL lockout ended any of those plans.
After talking with Lidstrom, the Wings will now wait until next season to honor one of the greatest defensemen in NHL history.
Lidstrom, a seven-time Norris Trophy winner, will be just the seventh number retired by the Wings. The others are Terry Sawchuk (1), Ted Lindsay (7), Gordie Howe (9), Alex Delvecchio (10), Sid Abel (12) and Steve Yzerman (19).
Lidstrom, who announced his retirement at the end of last season, played 20 seasons with Detroit.
