Tale of the tape

DETROIT — Brendan Smith went toe-to-toe with fellow rookie Andrew Shaw with 3:18 left in the second period.

The combatants:

Shaw: 5-foot-10 and 180 pounds, age: 25.

Smith: 6’1” and 199 pounds, age: 23.

The setup:

MacDonald froze the puck at the left side of his goal crease; Shaw crashed the net hard, falling back-first on top of the goalie. After helping Shaw up, Smith takes exception.

The throwdown: Tangled up, both struggle to get an arm free. Finally, Smith breaks through, landing four rights to Shaw’s head. Smith lands an over-the-top right; Shaw counters with a pair of uppercuts. Both tire out.

The winner: Smith.

The duration: About 35 seconds.

The aftermath: Five minutes each for fighting; Smith gets a congratulatory pat on the back from Todd Bertuzzi, before entering the Wings dressing room.
