Ian White in Wednesday; Brendan Smith up or down?

DETROIT — Quick update from practice Tuesday…

Defenseman Ian White will play Wednesday against the Calgary Flames, after missing the last four games with a fractured cheek bone.

Rookie defenseman Brendan Smith said after practice he was going back to Grand Rapids. However, Mike Babcock said afterwards that a decision on Smith won’t be made until after the morning skate Wednesday. He added that one of the other seven defensemen are banged up, but wouldn’t say who.

If Smith stays and no other player is placed on short-term injured reserve another Wing will be sent back to Grand Rapids. That player more than likely would be Fabian Brunnstrom.
