With the second pick the Wings received in a trade with the Ottawa Senators in the first round, they take defenseman Xavier Ouellet.
Ouellet, of France, plays for Montreal of the QMJHL. He had eight goals, 35 assists and 43 penalty minutes last season in 67 games.
His NHL Central Scouting ranking slipped from 39th at the midterm to 60th.
Ouellet is 6-0, 174 pounds and shoots left.
Here is TSN scout Grant McCagg take on Ouellet off tsn.ca:
One of the anchors on a veteran Montreal Juniors blueline, accumulating 43 regular-season points. Added eight assists in ten playoff games.
Strengths – Smart puck mover with some character, solid work ethic, plucky, really improved, appreciate him the more you see him. Gets good position on his man, strong character, competitive, very smart, uses body well, quick puck mover, a coach’s player.
Weaknesses – Not the greatest quickness, feet may be a problem. Lacks typical blueliner size, limited physical capabilities.
NHL Upside – Has the smarts and desire to crack the NHL as a bottom three defenseman with some offensive talents.
